Celebrating the life of
Arthur Thomas Smith Sr.
February 04, 1926 - February 19, 2014
Savannah- Arthur Thomas Smith, Sr. died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at his residence.
Mr. Smith was known as A.T. or AT to everyone. He was born on February 04, 1926, in Savannah, Georgia. He was a faithful husband, devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
AT joined the Georgia Air National Guard at an early age. He served our country in Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded three bronze medals in Korea, Vietnam, and a medal for his service during the occupation of Japan. AT retired from the Georgia Air National Guard where he worked for the 165th in flight maintenance for thirty years.
He met his late wife Doris when they were both working on a B-17 together at Hunter Army Airfield. They enjoyed fifty-eight years of marriage and had two children, Tommy and Lynn.
AT was a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church for most of his life. In the past few years he has been attending Savannah Christian Church.
For over twenty years, AT volunteered with the Bamboo Farm. He was a member of the American Camellia Society for fifty years. He was an avid gardener and his family and friends reaped the benefits of all the vegetables he harvested. He spent his life helping others. If you were sick, he cooked for you; if your car was broken, he fixed it; if your yard needed flowers, he planted them. He had a great love for all animals. AT rescued his late dog, Rusty. Rusty was spoiled, loved, and sported goggles as they toured the neighborhood on their golf cart. If you had a mission, you better hope he was on your side.
Preceding him in death was his wife, Doris Lynn Smith. Surviving family members are his son, Arthur Thomas Smith, Jr., and his wife, Cecelia H. Smith; daughter, Lynn S. Johnson and her husband, David Johnson. Three grandchildren: Barry Smith and his wife, Tina, Kelly Lammons, Sarah Paulk and her husband Charles, and five great grandsons and a sister, Marjorie Smith Hawkins. Susana Castillo, his most valued and loved, caregiver.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2014 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 22, 2014 at the Islands Chapel of Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Please accept our deepest sympathy with the passing of your loved one. 'AT' worked with my Daddy, 'Big John' Campbell, at the 165th Airlift group for many years, and I remember Daddy speaking of him fondly. He was a fine man.

The former things have passed away.'
